Detail Description

Discourses by R. Samuel ben Abraham Sarfaty (Zarfati) together with novellae on Talmudic tractates, and concluding with a super-commentary on R. Elijah Mizrahi by R. Vidal Sarfaty, both sages of Fez. The title page has a border comprised of rows of florets and a decorative head-piece. Its text states that it Nimmukei Shemu’el is a commentary on Rashi and the Ramban in response to the critical remarks of R. Elijah Mizrahi. This is followed by novellae on tractate Shevu’ot entitled Arugot ha-Bosem and ha-hut ha-Mesulash (“a threefold cord (hut ha-mesulash) is not quickly broken,” Ecclesiastes 4:12), on tractate Avodah Zarah entitled Me-Ulephet Sapirim (overlaid with sapphires, Song of Songs 6:14) and appended to the work is the overlaid with sapphires by R. Samuel Sarfaty’s grandfather R. Vidal Sarfaty. The verso of the title page has approbations from several prominent rabbis followed by the text. The discourses on the parashat are from 1a through 48b concluding with an attractive tail-piece. The novellae are from 49a through 64a. In addition to the tractates mentioned on the title page there are also novellae on Hagigah (62a-64a). The remiander of the volume is R. Vidal Sarfaty’s hasagot.

The Sarfaty, family of rabbinic scholars in Fez, Morocco traced its ancestry, according to a family tradition, to Rabbenu Tam. R. Vidal Sarfaty (c. 1550–1620) was referred to as "senior" and described as hasid ("pious"). He was a disciple of R. Abraham Uzziel. His commentaries are outstanding for their originality; he quotes the Zohar and appears to have been a kabbalist. Many of the works of Spanish rabbis are cited in his works. R. Sarfaty's writings included: Derekh ha-Kodesh, a commentary to the Sifra (1908); Megillat Sefarim, on Esther, Ruth, and Lamentations; and Ozar Nehmad, on Psalms (both works were published in Amsterdam in 1718 under the title Zuf Devash); Imrei Yosher (1874), a commentary on Midrash Rabbah; and notes on R. Elijah Mizrahi which were included in this work.
