Detail Description

Liturgies of the holiday Sukkot and commentary thereto by R. Moses Eliakim Beriah Hofstein of Kozienice (1757-1828). He was the second son if R. Israel of Kozienice and accompanied his father on visits to R. Elimelekh of Lejansk, where he was impressed by his ascetic lifestyle. R. Moses Eliyakim married the daughter of R. Judah Leib ha-Kohen of Annapol. It was his beliefe that a zaddik, in order to achieve perfection, must personally minister to his followersrather than isolate himself. R. Moses Eliyakim difrentiated between a zaddik son of a zaddik and one who is not descended from zaddikim, believing that the former are liable to boast about their ancestry which is most improper. If a zaddik is not truly humble he will achiev little, neither in the upper or lower worlds. It is the zaddik’s duty to raise his followers to a higher spiritual level and lead them to repentance. A prolific author, R. Moses Eliyakim’s works, in addition to Kohelet Moshe, include Beer Moshe (Lvov, 1868), Ve-Yahal Moshe (1864), a commentary on the haggadah ((1864), Matei Moshe on Shir ha-Shirim (1879), and several other titles.
