Detailed Description
Only edition of this two-part work of derashot based on R. Jonah ben Abraham Gerondi’s (Rabbenu Yonah), Sefer ha-Yirah and responsa, Emek ha-Berach ,on hilkhot Berahkot by R. Joseph ben Israel Ashkenazi. There is a volume title-page followed by a second title-page and further on a title-page for the second part entitled Nehpah le-Kesef. R. Joseph ben Israel Ashkenazi was the av bet din in Novy Aleksandrovsky,
The first part of Ohel Yosef is derashot on R. Jonah ben Abraham Gerondi’s (Rabbenu Yonah, c. 1200–1263) popular Sefer ha-Yirah. Rabbenu Yonah was a popular Spanish rabbi, author, and moralist. studied in the French yeshivot under R. Moses ben Shneur and his brother R. Samuel of Evreux, and later under R. Solomon ben Abraham of Montpellier. When in 1232 the latter began his campaign against Maimonides' philosophical works, Rabbenu Yonah followed his teacher and became one of his most devoted assistants in the conflict, which ended, according to tradition, in the burning of these books by the Inquisition. A few years later, in 1240, in the same square in which Maimonides' books had been burnt, tractates of the Talmud were burnt and Jonah saw this as divine retribution. Tradition has it that he repented, proclaiming in the synagogues: "I undertake to prostrate myself at Maimonides' grave and to confess that I spoke and sinned against his books" (letter of Hillel of Verona). Consequently, Jonah devoted himself to the study of Maimonides' works. Legend tells that Rabbenu Yonah tried to travel to Eretẓ Israel to ask forgiveness at Maimonides' grave, but was delayed in Toledo, where he later died violently.
The second part of Ohel Yosef, Kanfei Yonah, is also based on Rabbenu Yonah, this, according to the second part title-page, based on the kizzur divrei Rabbenu Yonah who wrote the dinnim in a concise manner. It notes that there are instances in which the Beit Yosef and the Rema did not decide the halakha as him. R, Ashkenazi explains the pertinent position of each one. A fascinating, valuable, and insightful detailed work by a scholar addressing the works of earlier sages of note.
