Physical Description:

Only edition. [4], 4-5, 31; [1], 35 ff., 306:208 mm., light age and damp staining, wide margins, old hands on titles. A very good copy bound in contemporary half leather and marbled paper boards, lightly rubbed.

With an unrecorded dedication page in French to Moses Hayyim Altaras of Marseilles for his financial sponsorship.

Signed Dedication Copy - with inscription on fly.

 

Detailed Description:   

Responsa by R. Israel b. Joseph Sasson (d. 1810), rabbi of Aleppo on all parts of the Shulhan Arukh, bound with the his son's work of twenty homilies. A distinguished rabbinic scholar, his commentary to Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim, Bet Yisrael is apparently still in manuscript. R. Sasson is frequently mentioned in the scholarly works of his contemporaries.

חלק ראשון, שאלות ותשובות (וחידושי דינים) על ארבעה טורים... חברתיו...

ישראל ס"ט בן... ר' יוסף ששון... ההסכמות הן גם על ספר ישועת ישראל של בן המחבר ר' ישועה ששון, שנדפס ונכרך עם ספר זה. דף ד-ה: דברי... נין ונכד... בעלי ההבורים (אשר העלה... על מזבח דפוסינו ספר התורה הזה)... אברהם ששון ס"ט. דף טז, ב-יט: עתה באתי... והעלתי על מזבח הדפוס סי[מן] אחד ... מהחיבור המפואר שחבר... זקיני זלה"ה בדיני או"ה, הכי קרא שמו הטוב: בית ישראל. כנראה לא יצא יותר.
