Detail Description

Only edition of these discourses on Bereshit and Shemot by R. Judah Leib ben Samson Ginzburg. The title page has an architectural frame and informs, in small letters that it is Amudei Olam. Below it adds in large letters, on Sefer Bereshit, not mentioning Shemot which is included in the volume. The lengthy text of the title page continues “and from there it was divided, and became four rivers” (Genesis 2:10). On three pillars the world rests, the pillar of Torah; the pillar of Avodah, this is prayer which is avodah of the heart; and the pillar of hesed (cf. Avot 1:2); and the name of the fourth is Hidekel whose waters are sharp and understandable. These are the words of the Mahril (R. Jacob Moellin) to allude that the author is the outstanding R. Judah Leib ben Samson Ginzburg of Slotzk, av bet din in Russia. It informs that he the title is from “and he called it Esek; because they strove with him” (Genesis 26:20) and is on Bereshit for the Lord was occupied with it (nisasek) and created His world. The text continues in this vein. On the verso of the ttile page are approbations from R. Saul Ginzburg and R. Joseph ben Shimon Baer and the author’s introduction. The text follows divided into four parts. At the top of the page is Amudei ha-Torah and Amudei Olam in a single column; immediately below in two columns are Amud ha-Tefillah and Amud ha-Hesed; and below them is Siftei Mahril, all in rabbinic letters.
