Detail Description

Samuel with commentaries and translation into German. The title page lists the contents, that is, the biblical book and that the text is accompanied by the commentaries of Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Mikhlal Yofi, and, in bold letters, translated into Ashkenaz (Judeo-German, Yiddish) by Isaiah (Jesaias) ben Hayyim Hochstaedter. There is a dedication by the translator to his father and teacher, R. Hayyim ben Isaac Isaiah ben Hayyim Hochstaedter and to his mother and teacher, Sarah. “from their son whose soul is bound with their souls” (cf. Genesis 44:30) followed by Hochstaedter’s introduction.

Within the volume the biblical text is in square vocalized Hebrew in the outer column at the top of the page. To the left in square unvocalized Hebrew letters is Hochstadter’s “Ashkenaz” translation. Below, in the inner column, is Rashi and next to it, in the outer column, is the commentary of R. Abraham ibn Ezra, both in rabbinic type. Below, across the width of the page in square letters, is the commentary Mikhlal Yofi. All together an attractive compendium of biblical commentaries with a German targum.
