Letter by R. David b. Joseph ha-Kohen Neumann, (1880-1944), Rabbi of Cigand, Hungary. He was born at Jaszovaralja, Hungary. His father served as the president of the Kosice Jewish community. His mother was Sarolta Adler. He studied at Kosice and Pozsony (Bratislava in current day Slovakia) and was appointed to the Rabbinate in Kosice. In 1920, as a result of the events of the First World War and the Peace Treaty of Trianon, the Czechoslovakian authorities expatriated a large segment of the Hungarian population. That’s when R. Neumann moved to Cigand, where he became the rabbi of the community. He became chief rabbi in 1926. He was a soft spoken, modest, well recognized Talmud Haham. He perished in the Holocaust.
Cigánd is a small town in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Northern Hungary, 80 kilometers from county capital Miskolc. Approximately 400 Jewish families resided there prior to the Holocaust.
