Detailed Description

Novellae and pilpulim on the Torah and tractates by R. Aryeh Judah Leib ben Samuel Gershon, printed by and together with novellae of the author’s son R. Joseph Benjamin Zev. The title page describes it as novellae of father and son, wondrous, such as not previously seen by the eye “two great lights” (Genesis 1:16) by day and night, profound insights in halakhah and mussar. The title page details the families distinguished lineage, noting the prestigious positions held by members in various cities, such as av bet din in Antwerp and rosh mesivta in Cracow, including R. Joel Sirkes (Bach) and the Yofeh To’ar among others. The second paragraph of the title page explains that the earlier edition, printed in Zolkiew, was not distributed outside of Poland and is not to be found. Given the great value of this work it is not being printed in Venice. The title page is appropriately dated “they shall be an ornament of grace to your head, and chains around your neck” (Proverbs 1:9). The title page is followed by an index, an introduction from R. Samuel ben Schneur ish Lipshitz, who brought the book to press, an approbation signed by R. Jacob Hai Levi, R. Isaac Hai Fas, R. Isaac Foa, R. Isaac Levi Meshlumim, and R. Aaron Kohen. The text is set in two columns in rabbinic letters.
