Detail Description
On the ethical will and testament of R. Moses Sofer (Hatam Sofer) with commentary by R. Akiva Joseph Schlesinger. Hatam Sofer (1762–1839) was among the greatest rabbis of the late eighteenth early nineteenth centuries, one of the foremost halakhic authorities of his time, and a leader of Orthodox Jewry. His ethical testament is wholly devoted to the battle for religion. Ha-Lev ha-Ivri (1864) of R. Akiva Joseph Schlesinger, one of Hatam Sofer’s students, is written in the form of a commentary on this will. The title page begins, “To teach the sons of Judah the use of the bow” (II Samuel 1:18) against three transgressions of the disbelievers, the Zedokim, to arrange against them the work Ma’arekhet Yisrael gathered from the sages of Israel, our later rabbis, the sages of Ashkenaz, Poland, Sefard, and Italy. Also, many words of reproof set in this book, particularly as relates to the breaches of this generation. R. Schlesinger’s name is given in such a manner that the enalarged latters spell ha-Ivri. The title page is dated with the verse, “to guard the way of the tree of life” (Genesis 3:24). There are three introductions, one general, one on the importance of testments, and the third on the value of this work. The text is in two columns, the brief inner column the testament of R. Hatam Sofer, set in square letters, the outer lengthy commentary entitled Lev ha-Ivri set in rabbinic letters.
